Why should a Scout unit sell popcorn?

There’s numerous reasons for a Scout unit to sell popcorn. Here are just a few:

  • Increase your unit and council income – more than 70% stays local
    • This is the only council approved fundraiser
    • Selling popcorn allows council to maintain lower fees charged for events and for use of camp
  • Pay for your entire Scouting program with just one fundraiser
    • One fundraiser, done well, means you can focus on your Scouting program fun the remainder of the year!
    • Scouts learn life lessons by “earning their own way”
    • The prize program motivates Scouts
    • NEW unit level commission structure increased for 2018
    • NEW online sale platform offers the easiest way to sell to friends and family out of town
      • Unit leaders and families do not have to handle product
      • Simplistic online effort for Scouts and unit leaders

New Commission structure designed for easier understanding

This year participating units can earn more commission for their popcorn sales effort than ever before with 36 percent total commission possible. The new structure was designed to be simpler to understand with a standard per Scout sales average determining the performance bones commission. Last year’s maximum commission was 33.5%.

Each Scout group received a cover page in their popcorn packets that details the amount for the unit to meet to qualify. The unit’s membership number is based on the registered Scouts as of July 31, 2018. When a unit recruits new Scouts this Fall, these new youth members are not added to increase the unit’s commission numbers.

  • Example: if on July 31, Scout Pack 3123 had 10 youth registered, then that is the number used for determining the 2% and 3% sales figures. If Scout Pack 3123 recruits an additional 8 youth this Fall, the number of youth the unit’s sales figures is still based on 10 and not 18.
